Sunred Nectarine is a dependable low-chill variety developed by the University of Florida for warm Southern growing regions. This early-producing nectarine develops attractive, bright-red fruit with smooth skin and firm, juicy yellow flesh.
The sweet, flavorful fruit is excellent for eating fresh, desserts, preserves, cobblers and other recipes. Sunred has a long history of successful production in Florida and remains a good choice for home orchards in areas with mild winters.
Plant Details
North Florida Growing Note
Sunred’s low chill requirement makes it suitable for North Florida, the Florida Panhandle and other warm-winter areas of the Gulf Coast.
Because Sunred blooms early, flowers and developing fruit may occasionally be damaged by a late frost. Planting the tree in an open location with good air circulation can help reduce frost pockets and disease pressure.
Nectarines require full sun, good drainage and regular care to produce their best crops. Avoid low areas where water remains after heavy rain.
Fruit and Harvest
Sunred produces rounded, smooth-skinned nectarines with bright-red coloring and firm yellow flesh. The fruit is generally smaller than some newer nectarine varieties but is valued for its sweet flavor and excellent fresh-eating quality.
Fruit should be allowed to develop good color and soften slightly before picking. Thin developing fruit when it is small to improve fruit size and reduce stress on the branches.
Pollination
Sunred Nectarine is self-fruitful, so a second nectarine tree is not required for fruit production. Bees and other pollinating insects visiting the spring flowers can help improve fruit set.
Planting and Care
Plant in full sun where the tree will receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day. Choose fertile, well-drained soil and keep the graft union above the finished soil level.
Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods. Apply mulch over the root zone while keeping it several inches away from the trunk.
Peach and nectarine trees produce fruit on growth formed during the previous year. Annual pruning helps maintain an open canopy, encourages healthy new growth and improves sunlight and air circulation throughout the tree.
